I am an illustrator originally from London, England, now based in Brooklyn, NYC.
My artistic training is diverse. After a multi-disciplinary art foundation course at Kingston University (UK), I went on to specialize in theatre design at Nottingham Trent University (UK). I graduated in 2002 with a first class honors degree. Over the course of the next 5 years, I designed sets and costumes for a variety of professional productions, mainly for children, which toured to cities across England and even as far as Japan! The experience was invaluable, teaching me the craft of building and communicating a strong story. My move to the big apple coincided with a shift in my specialization, from theatre design to illustration. I have since worked as a freelance illustrator and am currently the illustrator and creative director for Basis, a food brand with a heart - which celebrates sourcing and distributing traditional, localized, 100% traceable food.
As an artist, I am particularly spurred by stories, words and poetry. Ever since childhood, the act of reading has brought abundant images to my mind that I feel compelled to translate to paper. With an acute eye for detail, I celebrate unearthing sensory, poetic interpretations of given themes. My illustrations employ a variety of media, including gouache, watercolor pencils, dip pen and ink, assorted papers and modeling clay. I especially enjoy bringing my characters and landscapes to life in 3-D - as shown in my 'little worlds' section .
